A construction specialist, a cosmetics manufacturer and a well-known footwear retailer are among the companies to be ranked on Insider’s latest Owner-Managed Businesses (OMB) 100.

The table, which was sponsored by Brewin Dolphin, Director Bank, Gateley and LDC, lists companies in North West Business Insider’s Top 500 where the managing director is a shareholder. They are ranked by turnover growth over the last year.

Top of the pile is Russell Taylor, with all seven businesses under the parent company having grown over the past year. Further success is anticipated in 2019.

Owner and group chief executive Ben Russell attributes this to a number of factors, saying: “The businesses work well at cross-selling with each other, many of the markets we work in are buoyant and we are developing a good reputation across the industry.

“Most importantly, we have great people.”

Further growth will come through two small acquisitions the group is considering.

“Our plan is to blend acquisition or partnership with organic growth; it’s a system that has worked well over a number of years.”

Also in the top ten are Candour Logistics (2), William Loughran (5), Portal Construction NW (8) and Darwin Loan Solutions (10).

Also ranked is cosmetics specialist Amelia Knight at 19, whose turnover is set to hit more than £40m in 2019.

“We have big plans and we feel that this is just the start for Amelia Knight,” said director Paul Salmon. “Importantly, we have wanted to bring UK manufacturing in the business through the acquisition [of Pascalle Cosmetics] and we see a big opportunity to grow this arm of Amelia Knight.”

Norwest Foods International (26), Footasylum (36) and Danbro (58) all feature.

The latter has been grown by husband and wife team Helen and Damian Broughton into a £160m business.
